Harpers Ferry, Iowa is a charming, friendly, four seasons community located on the Great River Road in Northeast Iowa. One of the oldest settlements in Allamakee County, the town is bordered by the Mighty Mississippi River on the east and towering bluffs of the Upper Mississippi River valley on the west. During the summer months it is a popular resort area, growing from a population of 350 to over 3000. The river and sandbars in the playground of Iowa are great for fishing, boating, swimming, and water related activities. The area offers Mother Nature at her best. Miles of rolling countryside can be viewed by touring several of Iowa's Scenic By-ways in the area.
- Effigy Mounds National Monument and Yellow River Forest
are the town's neighbors. With over 12,000 acre of forest, rugged terrain, trout streams, equestrian trails, hiking, and camping, Yellow River Forest is a treasure to experience. Both Big Paint and Little Paint trout streams meander through the park. Numerous trout streams surround the Harper's area, offering great trout fishing to anglers. Large Mouth and Small Mouth Bass, Walleye, Northern, Catfish, and pan fish give Mississippi River anglers plenty of motivation to fish the Harpers's Ferry waters.
- As Summer Wanes
the vibrant Autumn colors in the area are an awe inspiring sight. Touring the Great River Road offers motorists and motorcyclists a chance to view the fall colors at their best. Sitting close to Lock and Dam #9, walleye fishing in the fall brings anglers from near and far. Part of the Upper Mississippi River National Refuge and the Mississippi Flyway, the Harper's area offers outstanding fishing and water fowl hunting in October and November.
- October brings the "Harvest Moon"
stirring the "Bow Hunters" passion. Allamakee County is known nationwide for it's Monster Bucks in the Boone & Crocket record books. Unlimited opportunities for bagging "the Big One" are in close proximity to Harpers Ferry. Except in campgrounds, all of Yellow River Forest is open to public hunting.
- Winter brings more
NE Iowa DEER HUNTING, ice fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and eagle watching. With the right conditions, these activities offer a chance to experience the Upper Mississippi Valley in all it's splendor.
- As Winter fades into Spring,
Walleye anglers eagerly make the trip to Lock #9. (Nothing like a pan of fresh fried fish to tickle the taste buds.) Offering three of the best boat ramps in the area, Harpers Ferry makes it easy to access the Mississippi River in the high water conditions of spring.
Sounds of birds returning echo throughout the valleys. No longer confined to open water, the Eagles soar above the bluffs. Watching them lock talons, cartwheel through the air, and glide again is beauty in motion.

Harpers Ferry, Iowa area has LOTS of opportunities to "BAG A BIG TOM TURKEY". Eastern wild turkeys are abundent in the area. Turkey hunters from all over come for the chance to harvest a record Tom. Yellow River Forest has it's own zone, but numerous opportunities may exist with local landowners. (ASK FIRST!)
